A site of 18,000 acres that started at the ocean and extended up Santa Ynez Canyon into the Santa Monica Mountains for 7 ½ miles. A natural setting from the sea to the mountains that became the location of many “Western” movies in the early days. The site housed a small municipality of 700 people with sets and stages designed to represent Switzerland, a Puritan settlement, a Japanese Village and Native Indian encampment and the famous film set for Civilization; near the present site of Marquez Elementary School.
